Submitting Cover Art for the JBMR

How can I submit an image for consideration as cover art for a future issue of the JBMR?
Cover art candidates may be submitted here. Ensure your image is saved as a TIF file and is no larger than 2MB, and include a brief (75-word limit) caption describing the image and its source information for attribution. Please note that by sending us an image you are allowing the JBMR unrestricted free use of your image in our publications and for publications marketing purposes.

Can I check on the status of my JBMR cover art submission?
You will be notified if the editors of the JBMR select your image is selected to ensure proper captioning and attribution, but we do not provide routine status updates regarding cover art.

Is the cover art linked to anything within the issue itself?
Not necessarily. Cover art submissions are considered independently of article submission, though we will try to match cover images with related articles when possible.

JBMR Manuscript Submission

May I submit an unsolicited review, commentary, or perspective?
The JBMR editors rarely consider unsolicited submissions of these article types. You may request an exception by sending a brief summary (~250 words) of your idea and its importance to the field of bone and mineral research to manuscript@asbmr.org. Please allow several weeks for the editors to evaluate your proposal. Authors are urged to submit a proposal before submitting reviews, perspectives, or commentaries that have not been invited.

Does the JBMR prefer basic, clinical, or translational papers?
The JBMR editors select articles based on scientific or clinical merit, as judged by independent peer reviewers. The Journal does not have a quota or fixed number of different types of papers.

Is there any way to submit a manuscript to the JBMR other than through the Journal’s online system?
No. The JBMR will only consider manuscripts that have been submitted via Editorial Manager.

What forms must be included with my submission, and when are they due?
Each author of your manuscript must fill out the following:
Author and Copyright Transfer Agreement
Conflict of interest policy form

The corresponding author is responsible for the following in addition to those listed above:
Color Charge Approval Form (if images are to be printed in color)
Submission Fee Form

All forms should be emailed to manuscript@asbmr.org or faxed to 202.367.2156 (US) as soon you receive your JBMR manuscript number.

Is a fee required for submitting a paper to the JBMR?

The JBMR charges a fee of $50.00 US for unsolicited manuscripts submitted to our peer-review system for initial consideration. These charges are waived for letters to the editor and for invited material.

When should I pay the JBMR submission fee, and how does this affect the peer review process?
The submission fee form should be submitted along with your other forms when you first submit your manuscript for publication. We cannot return a review or publish your manuscript without having this information on file.

How can I get a receipt for my submission fee?
If you would like a receipt for your submission fee, send an email to manuscript@asbmr.org and you will be sent an electronic copy. Be sure to include your manuscript number and the name appearing on the credit card in your message.

How can I change the corresponding author of my manuscript?
You will need the account name of the new corresponding author before our system will allow this duty to be reassigned. Please note that changing to a new corresponding author takes the manuscript out of your account and adds it to theirs. If your manuscript has already been submitted, please contact manuscript@asbmr.org for help with this process.

Why are keywords restricted in Editorial Manager? Must I only select terms on this list?
Editorial Manager provides a certain list of specific keywords to help us match your manuscript with expert reviewers. You are free to use any keywords you like within the manuscript itself, but we do require you to select from our list when prompted by our electronic system. These terms will not be printed or seen by anyone outside of our staff and reviewers.

What file formats are acceptable for the various parts of my submission?
Please refer to the following table:

Submission Item Accepted File
Types

Original Manuscript (including figure legends) DOC
Tables DOC, XLS
Figures TIF, EPS, PPT
Videos AVI

Do tables count against the seven figure limit?
Tables are not considered to be figures. You may include any number of tables in your submission, though we reserve the right to request a reduction in the number of tables if we feel the total to be unreasonable.

Can I embed my figures and tables into the manuscript itself?
We allow tables and figure legends to be embedded within the manuscript DOC file, but we cannot allow figure files to be uploaded in this way.

Should my figures be saved as separate files in JBMR submissions or can they be grouped together?
We do not require each of your figures to have a separate file; they may be grouped together so long as they are not embedded into the manuscript document.

Can I designate multiple panels of related images that do not exceed a single page as part of the same figure (e.g.: Fig 1A-1F)?
Yes, this practice is allowed.

Can I designate figures to be made available in color online while printing them in black & white?
JBMR does not currently support this practice. Figures will appear the same online as they do in print.

Who decides how color figure layout is done, and how does this affect my color charges?
Color figure layout is decided in part by our printer and in part by our staff. We strive to combine color figures onto the fewest number of pages possible to keep costs low. Your color charges will never exceed $900.00 per figure, and often your bill will be far less. If you have specific questions regarding color or page charges, please email contact@wiley.com.

Can my color figures be changed to black & white figures after the peer review process?
Depending on the complexity of the figures in question, the JBMR will allow authors to replace color figures with black & white versions of the same figures after the peer review process. Please send such requests to manuscript@asbmr.org for details.

How can I include supplemental data in my submission?
Supplemental data may take the form of videos, figures, or tables that provide helpful information or context without being vital to the manuscript itself. Editorial Manager allows the author to designate certain files as supplemental data, and such information will be published online at the discretion of our editorial staff.

Peer Review Process

The status for my submission hasn’t changed in weeks – is it even under review?
If you have been assigned a manuscript number, your submission is under consideration. Please allow at least three weeks for our reviewers and editors to work on your submission before inquiring about your manuscript’s status. Once a decision has been reached, the corresponding author associated with the submission will be notified by our office.

Publication Queries

My manuscript has been accepted! How soon can I expect to see it online?
Accepted manuscripts are placed into a publication queue once our office can verify that all required forms have been received. It typically takes less than a week for an accepted manuscript with the proper documentation on file to appear online.

What is the delay between online publication and printed publication?
JBMR offers online publication to ensure manuscripts get published in a timely fashion. Once your manuscript appears online, it is considered published and you may claim it as such. Printed publication lags several months behind due to our own internal decisions concerning page count and issue quality control and due to the nature of the printing business.

My paper is funded in whole or in part by NIH grants; will it get to PubMed in time to meet my requirements?
We will take care of this for you provided you have indicated in Editorial Manager that you have received NIH funding.

The author information listed online is inaccurate; how can I change it?
JBMR guidelines state that institutional information must be accurate at the time the manuscript was submitted. If this information changes during the peer review process or in the gulf between online and print publication, it does not need to be updated. If an author’s information is missing, incorrect, or misplaced, please send a message to manuscript@asbmr.org for assistance.
